The Twilight saga, as you all know, is a literary and
cinematographic "movement", if I may call it so. It managed to
influence a lot of teens and kids throughout the world and
also inspire them with a fascination
for the occult and the unknown. Despite the love story which is
practically the main plot, the
series consists out of an emblematic werewolf - vampire war (check out Underworld for other references)
and a vampire family conflict. The
film had its premiere in 2008, whilst the first novel, written by Stephenie Meyer, appeared in the
year 2005. Therefore, in just few years, the story managed to reach millions. Just
how was that possible, given the fact
that neither the books nor the movies excel in terms of meaning, style, or idea?
Certainly, let us take it step by step. The 1st book of the series, Twilight, describes the main Twilight casting and sets the frame for the action. Bella, a teenage girl with separated parents, decides to live with her dad in a rainy and cold city. There, she meets Edward, a charming 17 year old who seems to be utterly out of reach both for her and her friends. She then falls deeply in love with him and finds out he's a vampire who urges for her blood. To complicate the plot, he falls in love with her too, and the two proceed in having a forbidden relationship which may end up in Bella's death. I really hope it's clear up to now. I met many people who judge the book and also consider it has absolutely no value or perhaps message. Let us take the fundamental thought and apply it towards the main public - teenage girls.
Each and every teenage girl passes through a phase in which she feels misunderstood by her parents (Bella - her parents are separated). Depression is also a fundamental characteristic of the age, especially for the emotive. Afterwards, comes the pursuit of refugee - basic human contact, particularly love. Also, almost every teenage girl has a crush on somebody who she feels is out of her reach (Bella as well as Edward relationship) and search for possible solutions of the situation. The movie practically provides them an alternative scenario for his or her lives. They look for a possible outcome which may favor their fragile minds and souls. Twilight comes with the answer - watch the film, forget about your life, possess a crush on Edward instead of Josh from your high-school.
So is this healthy? No. Yet it applies. Yet again, I have seen plenty of ladies together with Twilight movie casting over wallpapers on their own computer and Edward Cullen screensavers on their own phone. On the other hand, we should try to see the bright side: they'll grow out of it. Moreover, the movie may inspire fascination for the occult - I started out with Twilight too, to be honest. But then I began reading gothic literature and have become fascinated with old vampire movies, just like Nosferatu or Bela Lugosi's Dracula. You just have to know how to take the best out of it.
Consequently, if your teenage lady is obsessed with Twilight, tend not to panic. Keep calm - the last movie of the series airs this year. And perhaps buy her Anne Rice's Vampire's Chronicles for her birthday.
